Robben Ford - "Blues Connotation" (1996) @ 320kb W/Scans

Robben is known for playing a wide range of styles including blues and jazz, but this disc is strictly for those who enjoy improvisational jazz. There is no similarity between this recording and any of the typical blues recordings from Robben's early years or later with the Blue Line. If you enjoy Robben's more typical blues style - or even if you merely expect music to have a melody - you will likely be disappointed with this recording.- By Ray.

Tunnels - "Painted Rock" (1999) @ 320kb W/Scans

Mike Haid at Fuse Magazine writes about Painted Rock, "Right away there is an open, airy, jazzy fusion vibe that dominates this release. Speaking of vibes, Marc Wagnon once again headlines this instrumental quartet playing "MIDI vibes" and guiding the music. The mellow toned Van Manakas on guitar shares the improvisation with Wagnon as the inventive rhythm section of Frank Katz (drums) and Brand X bass legend Percy Jones explore the grooves. There is excellent variety on this release from the intense drum driven "Neuro- Transmitter" to the floating "Quai Des Brumes." The rhythm section of Jones and Katz is very inspirational as they perform with a deeply agressive emotion that carries much of the material. "Neuro-Transmitter" is an epic fusion piece that allows all members to explore their instrument from a sensitive, as well as spastic, point of veiw. Lots of interesting rhythms, melodies, sounds and time feels are what make this release an exceptional instrumental collection that serious fusion lovers will certainly enjoy. This music moves in a fresh, new direction."

Request: Steps Ahead - "N.Y.C." (1989) @ 320kb

Brad this is your request.

In 1989, Steps Ahead consisted of Mike Mainieri on MIDI vibraharp, synclavier and acoustic piano, the young saxophonist Bendik doubling on keyboards, guitarist Steve Kahn, Tony Levin on electric bass and Chapman stick, and drummer Steve Smith. The powerful band did not have a great deal of subtlety by this era, but it helped to keep the much-maligned genre of fusion alive, mixing the sound of rock with jazz improvising. The 11 selections on this obscure effort were all written or co-composed by Mainieri and Bendik and make up in intensity for their lack of dynamics. Rock listeners will most enjoy this decent, if not too substantial release. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide.

Solis Lacus - Solis Lacus [1975](192kb) -NMR-

Supple and subtly devastating jazz rock that seems to float a few feet off the ground from this offshoot of Placebo, who were effectively Belgium's answer to Nucleus, something that could equally be said about Solis Lacus as well. Thats the sort of factoid guaranteed to assure pricked ears and plastered grins in my social orbit and these cats make it all just sound so bloody effortless; their liquidly expanding and contracting rhythmic sense, elegiac Ian Carr-like trumpet phrasing and overall aerated Rhodes-washed atmospherics causing this at different times to glance off of both Transit Express and Hal Galper as well. Monster caliber.

LineUp:
Richard Rousselet - trumpet, flugelhorn, percussion
Robert Jeanne - tenor & soprano saxophone
Michel Herr - piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano
Nick Kletchkovsky -electric bass
Bruno Castellucci - drums, percussion
or
Félix Simtaine - drums (in Peace Please & Remake)

The Solis Lacus album was recorded in April 1974 ("Remake" only) and May 1975 at Madeleine studio, Brussels.

Bob Mintzer & Michael Brecker - "Twin Tenors" (2004) @ 320kb

Bob Mintzer and Michael Brecker appear together and individually on this date for Novus from the early 1990s, joined by a fine rhythm section consisting of pianist Don Grolnick, bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Peter Erskine. Mintzer is the dominant voice on the CD, playing without Brecker on six of the nine tracks and contributing five originals. His moving ballad "Tenorman's Lament" is a warm tribute to Wayne Shorter, while the driving blues "The Saxophone" is bursting with energy. Brecker is on hand for a joint romp through John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" (a second version features only Mintzer), Mintzer's intricate blues"Two T's" and on his own for a lush interpretation of "Body and Soul," the latter which is combined in a medley with Mintzer's setting of "Everything Happens to Me." While the CD title is a bit misleading, the performances are consistently at a high level. With the demise of the label, this out of print release has turned into a sought-after collectable. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide.

Herbie Hancock - "The New Standard" (1996) @ 320kb W/Scans

THE NEW STANDARD is a collection of reinterpretations of modern pop songs by Nirvana, Prince, The Beatles, Sade and others."Manhattan (Island Of Lights And Love)" won a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. The voices are instantly recognizable. Jack DeJohnette's percussive timekeeping has an unmistakable feel to it--full, tight, busy. John Scofield's bright and warm guitar always slides right into the groove. And Herbie Hancock's mastery of the piano--exquisite voicings, inventive lines and precise time--combines with his and Bob Belden's insightful arrangements. The songs are standards, but not like you've ever heard them before.Herbie Hancock has truly created THE NEW STANDARD, and it makes perfect sense. One wonders why, in an age of incestuous contemporary jazz, no one has successfully mined the wealth of recent American popular music. After all, one of the foundations of jazz itself has been the recycling and reinterpreting of "standards" taken from the great American songbook--tunes by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers & Hart, Johnny Mercer, et al. These icons were responsible for much of the popularity of jazz in the past. Yet one of the problems with jazz today is that most of its listeners weren't even alive when these masters were in bloom.Hancock does exactly what the old giants of jazz did: apply his keen ear to the songs and sounds of contemporary popular music, and he plays what he hears. Thus we have a frenetic version of Don Henley's "New York Minute," a grooving "Mercy Street" that benefits from Don Alias' percussion, a swinging "Scarborough Fair," and equally creative takes on Prince, Stevie Wonder, Nirvana and The Beatles. Throughout, Hancock, DeJohnette, Scofield, Dave Holland and Michael Brecker blow like the stunning dream team that they are.

Robby Ameen - "Days In The Life" (2009) @ 320kb

What a week for great music this has been, it’s an honor to present to you on today the Afro-Latin Jazz and modern-funk flavors of drummer Robby Ameen.
This is new burning creative jazz which has afro-Cuban, straight-ahead, and post- modern funk influences played by musicians with a lifetime rapport.
During the time that Robby Ameen has spent living in New York City since the early eighties he has compiled a recording career stretching from Dizzy Gillespie to Paul Simon, while maintaining a more than twenty year relationship with Latin icon Ruben Blades as a member of Seis del Solar. Although he is of Lebanese origin, Robby is best known for the unique and powerful Afro-Cuban jazz style he has developed. Growing up in New Haven, Connecticut, Robby was able to take advantage of his proximity to New York City by going to clubs and hearing many of the great jazz masters at a very young age. At the same time, he was involved in the local jazz and latin scene, as well as later attending Yale University, where he received a BA in literature. His jazz roots were strongly influenced by his studies with the great Ed Blackwell in high school, while in college he studied classical percussion with the renowned Fred Hinger.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba - "Paseo" (2004) @ 320kb W/Scans

One of the most visible figures on the Afro-Cuban jazz scene, Gonzalo Rubalcaba is anything but a straightforward revivalist. PASEO, the pianist's 2004 release, takes the listener on a journey ("paseo" translates as "journey" or "walk") that obliquely references Afro-Cuban forms through the filters of hard bop, fusion, and elements of modal and free jazz. There is a driving, fragmentary funk backdrop to much of PASEO, with electric bassist Jose Armando Gola and drummer Ignacio Berroa creating a fantastic, push-pull interplay that lends a pulsing, contemporary feel.In Rubalcaba's compositions one can hear Cuban forms ("El Guerrillero" is rooted in the son) and nods to North American jazz (one recognizes the influence of Miles Davis's early electric period, especially when--as on "Paseo Con Fula" Rubalcaba plays the electric keyboards). Luis Felipe Lamoglia's saxophone work is mercurial, and perfectly integrated into the framework (on the atmospheric "Santo Canto" he seems to play only for tension and texture). The Latin elements are here in skeletal form, with such an array of complex textures and influences mixed in that the result is something entirely new. PASEO is testament to the fact that Rubalcaba is responsible for some of the best jazz of the early 2000's.

Gonzalo Rubalcaba - "Giraldilla" (1990) @ 320kb W/Scans

A descendant of various generations of Cuban musicians, Gonzalo Rubalcaba has become known as one of the top pianists of Jazz around the world. Giraldilla is an excellent example of his work.
Rubalcaba's follow-up to Mi Gran Pasion couldn't have been more unlike its predecessor. Musicians from a country where the phones don't work are set down in a high-tech German studio. It's strident, sprawling, and brilliant. World music? This is it. Dissonant counterpoint worthy of an Austrian, percussion that only a Cuban could play and the excitement of a young world-class pianist still learning to control his power.

Tommy Denander - "Skeleton" (1995) @ 320kb W/Scans

"Skeleton", meanwhile, is actually an instrumental concept album complete with a mini-novel from Tommy in the booklet which is a rather ambitious approach on a project with no vocals. It's quite different from "Less is More" and is much more full tilt and technical. Tommy really lets go with some outrageous licks on some of the tracks, overall its like a wild fusion of Saga (around their "Head and Tales" period) and Steve Morse, with an outstanding, killer guitar sound the majority of European guitarist can only dream about.

Jan Garbarek - "Visible World" (1996) @ 192kb W/Scans

Once again thanks Brad for your contribution.

Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more instantly recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek; actually, given the fact that Sanborn's sound is so widely copied, Garbarek's may be easier to identify in a blindfold test. This album in particular puts that sound front and center. Garbarek's the show; he composed all of the music, and is essentially the only soloist. The music (much of which was composed as soundtrack material for film or video) is quintessential Garbarek, full of the world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbarek's resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. He's as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The record's most notable secondary player is Garbarek's ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbarek's. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part -- attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. There's an intensity here borne of deep concentration and commitment to beauty. Garbarek has come a long way since his early days as a quasi-free jazz experimentalist. This music is not jazz, nor is it experimental. But it is compelling in its way, representative of a first-rate creative musician, beyond category. ~ Chris Kelsey, All Music Guide.

Jan Garbarek - "Twelve Moons" (1994) @ 192kb W/Scans

Thanks to TestForEcho78's for provides this wonderful material.

TWELVE MOONS was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.Recorded in 1992, this album emphasizes production value and slick performances. Largely a feature for Jan Garbarek's soprano sax (he only plays tenor on three tracks), each song is dreamy and quite mystical. Compositionally, TWELVE MOONS is a curious blend of light jazz and Norwegian folk melodies. This is especially apparent on "Psalm" and "Darvanan," both of which feature female vocalists, while "Huhai" borrows from a traditional folk tune.Fans of Garbarek's penetrating, English horn-like soprano sax sound are treated to some inspired playing throughout, and drummer Manu Katche, best known for his work with Peter Gabriel and Sting, shines on every track. Additionally, there is nice interplay between Garbarek and the band on "Witchi-Tai-To," a remake of a tune first recorded by the saxophonist on a '74 album of the same name.

Jan Garbarek - "I Took Up The Runes" (1991) @ 192kb W/Scans

Our Friend TestForEcho78's sent to me a pack of files and I'm posting one of them. Thanks so much Brad for your big contribution.

An introspective album, I TOOK UP THE RUNES, combines jazz with Norwegian folk music. This is nothing new for Jan Garbarek, who has long been interested in combining the traditional music of his homeland with modern jazz. Also typical of the Scandinavian saxophonist's work is an emphasis on ethereal tapestries of sound. Long tones are stressed throughout, and the rhythm section constructs contagious, hypnotic grooves on many of the album's 10 tracks. The centerpiece for I TOOK UP THE RUNES is a five-part work called "Molde Canticle," but the highlight of the album is clearly the lush "Buena Hora, Buenos Vientos," a piece that features the vibrant yet sensitive piano playing of Rainer Bruninghaus. An explorative set of compositions that are smartly produced and finely wrought, I TOOK UP THE RUNES is an album that takes the listener on a journey to a far-off mystical place.

Chris Mann of Smooth & Soul enthuses, "All I can say is, if you think you knew what any of the players on this CD could do, think again." Grapevine features eleven instrumentals, one vocal number ("The Shine"), and their jazzy spin on a song made popular by the Temptations ("I Heard It Through The Grapevine"), with brief, talkbox vocalisms.

'Igginbottom's - "'Igginbottom's Wrench" (1969) @ 320kb

This is one weird-ass album, and one that will probably become better known as time goes on and more people discover that it's a very early musical document of Allan Holdsworth -- he was part of 'Igginbottom's Wrench along with David Freeman on drums, Steve Robinson on the other guitar, and Mick Skelly on bass. 'Igginbottom's Wrench, their one and only album, bears about the same relationship to Holdsworth's later work that The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp does to Robert Fripp's work, and it's curious that both albums are on the same label. 'Igginbottom's Wrench also sounds a lot like GG&F, kind of arty, theatrical psychedelia with some prominent jazz influences weaving in and out, but none of it taken seriously enough to be played or sung especially well, and it's easy to see how this recording got overlooked in 1969. It's mostly notable for the presence of "Golden Lakes," which evolved into "Velvet Darkness" and loomed ever larger in the decades to come. This shows Holdsworth at his least precise and pretentious, not in great form instrumentally or vocally (but not bad, either), noodling around in a less-than-formal setting and calling it an album. It's great fun and it will probably delight Holdsworth's fans, and anyone into late-'60s progressive rock or jazz/rock fusion. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide.
