Tommy Denander - "Skeleton" (1995) @ 320kb W/Scans

"Skeleton", meanwhile, is actually an instrumental concept album complete with a mini-novel from Tommy in the booklet which is a rather ambitious approach on a project with no vocals. It's quite different from "Less is More" and is much more full tilt and technical. Tommy really lets go with some outrageous licks on some of the tracks, overall its like a wild fusion of Saga (around their "Head and Tales" period) and Steve Morse, with an outstanding, killer guitar sound the majority of European guitarist can only dream about.

Jan Garbarek - "Visible World" (1996) @ 192kb W/Scans

Once again thanks Brad for your contribution.

Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more instantly recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek; actually, given the fact that Sanborn's sound is so widely copied, Garbarek's may be easier to identify in a blindfold test. This album in particular puts that sound front and center. Garbarek's the show; he composed all of the music, and is essentially the only soloist. The music (much of which was composed as soundtrack material for film or video) is quintessential Garbarek, full of the world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbarek's resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. He's as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The record's most notable secondary player is Garbarek's ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbarek's. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part -- attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. There's an intensity here borne of deep concentration and commitment to beauty. Garbarek has come a long way since his early days as a quasi-free jazz experimentalist. This music is not jazz, nor is it experimental. But it is compelling in its way, representative of a first-rate creative musician, beyond category. ~ Chris Kelsey, All Music Guide.

Jan Garbarek - "Twelve Moons" (1994) @ 192kb W/Scans

Thanks to TestForEcho78's for provides this wonderful material.

TWELVE MOONS was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.Recorded in 1992, this album emphasizes production value and slick performances. Largely a feature for Jan Garbarek's soprano sax (he only plays tenor on three tracks), each song is dreamy and quite mystical. Compositionally, TWELVE MOONS is a curious blend of light jazz and Norwegian folk melodies. This is especially apparent on "Psalm" and "Darvanan," both of which feature female vocalists, while "Huhai" borrows from a traditional folk tune.Fans of Garbarek's penetrating, English horn-like soprano sax sound are treated to some inspired playing throughout, and drummer Manu Katche, best known for his work with Peter Gabriel and Sting, shines on every track. Additionally, there is nice interplay between Garbarek and the band on "Witchi-Tai-To," a remake of a tune first recorded by the saxophonist on a '74 album of the same name.

Jan Garbarek - "I Took Up The Runes" (1991) @ 192kb W/Scans

Our Friend TestForEcho78's sent to me a pack of files and I'm posting one of them. Thanks so much Brad for your big contribution.

An introspective album, I TOOK UP THE RUNES, combines jazz with Norwegian folk music. This is nothing new for Jan Garbarek, who has long been interested in combining the traditional music of his homeland with modern jazz. Also typical of the Scandinavian saxophonist's work is an emphasis on ethereal tapestries of sound. Long tones are stressed throughout, and the rhythm section constructs contagious, hypnotic grooves on many of the album's 10 tracks. The centerpiece for I TOOK UP THE RUNES is a five-part work called "Molde Canticle," but the highlight of the album is clearly the lush "Buena Hora, Buenos Vientos," a piece that features the vibrant yet sensitive piano playing of Rainer Bruninghaus. An explorative set of compositions that are smartly produced and finely wrought, I TOOK UP THE RUNES is an album that takes the listener on a journey to a far-off mystical place.

'Igginbottom's - "'Igginbottom's Wrench" (1969) @ 320kb

This is one weird-ass album, and one that will probably become better known as time goes on and more people discover that it's a very early musical document of Allan Holdsworth -- he was part of 'Igginbottom's Wrench along with David Freeman on drums, Steve Robinson on the other guitar, and Mick Skelly on bass. 'Igginbottom's Wrench, their one and only album, bears about the same relationship to Holdsworth's later work that The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles & Fripp does to Robert Fripp's work, and it's curious that both albums are on the same label. 'Igginbottom's Wrench also sounds a lot like GG&F, kind of arty, theatrical psychedelia with some prominent jazz influences weaving in and out, but none of it taken seriously enough to be played or sung especially well, and it's easy to see how this recording got overlooked in 1969. It's mostly notable for the presence of "Golden Lakes," which evolved into "Velvet Darkness" and loomed ever larger in the decades to come. This shows Holdsworth at his least precise and pretentious, not in great form instrumentally or vocally (but not bad, either), noodling around in a less-than-formal setting and calling it an album. It's great fun and it will probably delight Holdsworth's fans, and anyone into late-'60s progressive rock or jazz/rock fusion. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide.

Request: Shawn Lane - "Powers Of Ten" (1992) @ 320kb W/Scans

Hey Cucho 76 this one is for you.

Shawn Lane's solo debut, Powers of Ten, showcases a phenomenally talented guitarist and musician who, unfortunately, doesn't seem to understand his own limitations. Emerging from digital silence with Steve Vai-like drama, "Not Again," the opening song on the record, is typical of the fusiony guitar-driven instrumentals that make up the bulk of Powers of Ten. These tracks, when not veering dangerously close to soap opera land, are pleasant enough, with just enough slippery lines to keep the listener interested. As Lane himself provides all the keyboards, basses, and drums, Powers of Ten is an impressive solo statement. But however impressive it is that Lane was able to play all of this music himself, it just never sounds like a full band playing together, with the attendant loss of energy and drive (the clearly triggered drum sounds are an especially egregious misstep). Also counting against Lane are two long and meandering pseudo-classical pieces: "Powers of Ten: Suite" and "Piano Concertino: Transformation of Themes." Played on synthesizers with questionable patches, these lengthy tracks completely interrupt whatever momentum Lane was gathering over the course of the first side of the record. This is a real shame, because he truly has a unique voice on his primary instrument; there are shades of Vai and Eric Johnson in his guitar playing, to be sure, but overall he definitely has his own sound and his own vision. After listening to Powers of Ten, one is left wishing that Lane could have hooked up with a live band and avoided the pretentious and self-indulgent noodling of the middle of the record. As it is, Powers of Ten is uneven and frustrating, and does not serve to present this fantastic musician in the best possible light. ~ Daniel Gioffre, All Music Guide.

Eddie Gomez - "Gomez" (1984) @ 320kb W/Scans

Eddie Gomez is a brilliant bassist whose flexibility and quick reflexes make him an ideal accompanist (although his own albums tend to be a bit erratic jazz-wise). He grew up in New York and was with the Newport Festival Youth Band during 1959-1961. After studying at Juilliard, Gomez played with Rufus Jones' sextet, Marian McPartland (1964), Paul Bley (1964-1965), Giuseppe Logan, Gerry Mulligan, and Gary McFarland, among others. Gomez came to fame during his long period with the Bill Evans Trio (1966-1977). He has since worked in a countless number of settings, including filling in for Charles Mingus (1978) and with Steps Ahead (1979-1984), Benny Wallace, Joanne Brackeen, Jack DeJohnette, Chick Corea, and in commercial settings as a studio musician. Ignacio Berroa - "Codes" (2006) @ 320kb W/Scans

The renowned Cuban jazz drummer Ignacio Berroa's debut album as a bandleader is a percolating fusion of African rhythms, neo bop passages, and Berroa's own trademark technically brilliant yet intuitive playing. "Joao Su Merced" takes a litany of Berroa's personal influences as a foundation for extended forays into Afro-Cuban fusion, while "La Comparsa" alternates between straight-ahead jazz and Cuban-influenced solos. Berroa's supple, supportive accompaniment is an education in jazz drumming, though school was never like this.

Stanley Jordan - "Stolen Moments" (1991) @ 320kb

Stolen Moments, which captures Stanley Jordan, bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard live at the Blue Note in Tokyo, Japan, offers high energy, strong group interplay and a very enthusiastic audience. This album has lots of burnin' straight-ahead jazz. On several tracks, Stanley plays two guitars at the same time (no overdubs). Stolen Moments features Stanley playing chords on one guitar with his left hand while simultaneously playing melodies on another guitar (attached to a synthesizer) with his right hand. A great way to experience cuts from out-of-print albums, such as his take on the Led Zeppelin classic, "Stairway To Heaven".

Stanley Jordan - "Cornucopia" (1990) @ 320kb W/Scans

The first half of this CD by the remarkable guitarist Stanley Jordan is so strong that it is a pity that things decline during the latter half. Jordan is quite outstanding on "Impressions" and "Autumn Leaves," emulates B.b. King on "Still Got The Blues", interprets a thoughtful "Willow Weep For Me" and performs a dazzling tour-de-force on the uptempo blues "Fundance"; the latter two are unaccompanied solos that sound like duets or trios. However a couple of funk pieces (including an unimaginative rendition of "What's Going On") and a New Age synthesizer selection are on a lower level.

Scott Tarulli - "Transitions" (2003) @ 320kb W/Scans

Finally, with much anticipation, guitarist and Berklee College of Music instructor Scott Tarulli has released his first CD, Transitions. His all instrumental quartet plays music as diverse as the frontman's playing. From aggressive jazz/funk to textural ballads, the band plays music for all seasons. The music is packed with jazz elements and energy, rock attitude, breathy pop, and slammin' funk grooves. The music is never the same twice. Improvising ensures music of the moment. John Stix, editor for Guitar For the Practicing Musician writes, "Scott's rockin' and ballad approaches suck you in rather than stun you. Themes, textures, mood and melody all get equal billing, making his a musical, not just a guitar statement." Metronome Magazine also enthused, "Guitarist Scott Tarulli (and band) exhibit their considerable chops and versatility for musical interpretation on this cool sounding disc."

Pat Metheny Group - "Travels" (1983) [Flac] W/Scans

A double album that flirts with rock, folk, country and Latin - but is emphatically a jazz album. Metheny is equipped with probably his best ever live group; Steve Rodby, Dan Gottlieb, Nana Vasconcelos, and his right arm, keyboard virtuoso Lyle Mays. The recording exudes warmth, and often improves on tracks already issued on studio albums; for example, 'Phase Dance' is played with more verve and 'Song For Bilbao' sounds more passionate in a live context. The diamond in the mine, however, is the shortest piece - the glorious and delicate title track - worth the price of the album alone.

Andy Summers - "The Last Dance Of Mr. X" (1997) [Flac] W/Scans

Though perhaps best (or at least better) known for his work with the Police, guitarist Andy Summers seems to be doing rather well for himself. He may not be filling arenas and attracting screaming teenage girls, but their mothers can scream pretty loud as well, and as it is to them that Summers now appears to be playing, his maturity and ability to look forward work in his favor. Backed by bassist Tony Levin and drummer Gregg Bissonette (except on "Big Thing," which features the touring band of Jerry Watts on basses and Bernie Dresel on cymbal-laden drum set). Summers works well as a frontman. In fact, the lack of single-named eco-conscious smoothies and relatives of famous composers allows Summers to spread out and explore his music. Summers puts his "Soul-O" amp to good use in the original tracks "Big Thing," "Strange Earth," "Mr. X," "Rumplestiltskin," and "The Somnambulist." However, through the predominance of covers of tunes such as Horace Silver's cleanly swaying "Lonely Woman," the sprightly swing of Thelonious Monk's "We See," the samba tinge of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," and an easy-going take on Charles Mingus' "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,"Mr. X demonstrates a solid grasp not only of jazz (albeit 'smooth jazz"), but also of a number of other streams as well. This is especially evident on the title track, which repeatedly rolls in like an ambient Latin tide, then flashes sharply and smoothly to such diverse styles as polka and surf (Mr. X must be quite a dancer indeed!), in addition to a sampling of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love." Whether Summers was underappreciated in the '80s remains to be seen, but his solo work definitely deserves attention. ~ Matthew Robinson, All Music Guide.

Request: Chad Wackerman - "Legs Eleven" (2004) @ 320kb W/Scans

'Legs Eleven' is the latest CD from electric jazz drummer Chad Wackerman.(Chad has played with Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Andy Summers, Steve Vai, James Taylor and John Patitucci among many others). The project was composed and recorded in Chad's second homeland Australia, and is a reflection of the time he has spent in the country. Featuring Chad's urgent and exciting drumming, the CD has an openess which echoes the Australian landscape. 'It's very hard for me to separate the music I play with the way I feel and my surroundings - especially music that has improvisational elements in it', Chad says. The musicians involved in the project have been playing together as an ensemble for the past seven years. James Muller is one of Australia's finest young guitarists, Leon Gaer on bass is a studio heavyweight who originally hails from L.A. and Daryl Pratt, the electric vibraphonist, is a highly regarded jazz and classical percussionist. 'Legs Eleven', with its percussive edge, rewards the listener with an intense and exhilarating experience.

Repost: Ed DeGenaro - "Less Is Seldom More" (2009) @ 256kb

Guitarist Ed DeGenaro's latest release, Less Is Seldom More (Unfretted Records), is a perfect follow-up to his 2007 disc Dog House. While the two albums share many of the same qualities (largely gapless playback, an eclectic mix of styles, etc), DeGenaro pushes the "avant-garde fusion" envelope a bit further with this new disc, and enlists an awe-inspiring lineup of musicians to help him do it.Most people probably associate DeGenaro with fretless guitar, which is understandable; he is widely heralded for his great work on that instrument. But while there is plenty of fretless playing on Less Is Seldom More, DeGenaro doesn't beat you over the head with it; his approach with the fretless, at least on this recording, is usually subtle. In the hands of most players, the fretless guitar sounds like an untame-able beast. Even the simplest phrase with no slides will give it away, because they just don't have the touch to keep it in tune, and in control. In DeGenaro's hands, however, you usually can't tell it's a fretless until he wants you to. In other words, he uses the instrument for it's unique ability to extend your own inflections and dynamics, rather than exploiting it as a novelty.

Threeo - "Live" (1998) @ 192kb

The Austrian trio Threeo, lead by guitarist Gerald Gradwohl, is a vibrant fusion trio augmented by the presence of tenorman Bob Berg on this their latest cd. The group has a funky, high energy approach to fusion, as evidenced on their rhythm-changes tribute to Tribal Tech, "Technotronic" which features fine solos from the entire band. For fans of modern fusion with an edge.

Second Vision - "It's All In The Mind" (2003) @ 320kb W/Scans

I was unfamiliar with this Dutch fusion ensemble but immediately became a fan upon hearing this SACD. They're a sort of mix of Oregon, Spyro Gyra and Weather Report, though without the heavy funk element of the latter. An unusual effort went into this album, which is not their first. They came to New York to record it in a studio there, and in the process invited Reeves and Mainieri to join them. All the compositions are originals by Busstra except the final one. I like the band's witty tune titles.Mainieri's vibes add a welcome and swinging element to the proceedings on several tracks, and Dianne Reeves' track is Tale of Two Angels - a slow and dreamy vocal marveling over two children. Peter Lieberom plays a long and lyrical soprano sax solo on The Spiral. Strangelets is an uptempo number full of odd electronic sound bytes. Mainieri's vibes are at the forefront of Oval Frame. Ants! Again? is an electronically funky track with raid staccato sax figurations and a creative Fender Rhodes solo by de Bovenkamp. The closing The Dave After, written by two other band members, features a tight duo of electric guitar and sax carrying the melody in a relaxed and laid back groove. Sonics are tops, as always with Turtle, but I do wish labels putting out stereo-only SACDs would be good enough to indicate that on both the package and the disc. I mistakenly thought again that I had lost the connections to my surround speakers, until I finally substituted another SACD and discovered there was no connection problem. Other Turtle discs had all been multichannel as I recall.

Endel Rivers - "Hardbite" (2002) @ 128kb HQ

Supported by a stellar cast of musicians, including Allan Zavod (ex-Frank Zappa) on keyboards, Australian-based guitarist Endel Rivers' CD Hardbite is an all-instrumental, twelve track collection of progressive fusion/rock. Rivers, born in Estonia under Soviet rule, set himself the challenge to create and bring forth a new color into the world's progressve and jazz-rock scene. Also featuring Glenn Roche on drums and Evan Harris on bass, among others, Hardbite is a fantastic album that fans of this music genre will find compelling and suitable for many repeated listenings. The CD is an extended CD, and features two bonus videos - but that's assuming you ever get it out of your CD player and into your computer! Highly recommended.
